Meet Elliot Olson

At Preferred Electric, a Horwitz Company, success is built by people who embrace challenges, foster collaboration, and continuously evolve alongside the industry. Elliott Olson embodies that mindset. From his early exposure to the trades to managing projects for industrial manufacturing clients today, Elliott’s journey showcases the growth, leadership, and customer commitment that continue to drive Preferred Electric forward.

Rooted in the Trades

Elliott’s connection to the electrical industry began long before his professional career. Growing up surrounded by family members in the trades — including his father, brothers, uncles, and cousins — he was exposed early on to the hard work, problem-solving, and teamwork that define the electrical industry. While he originally envisioned a future working primarily in the field, the growing demand for estimators and project managers after college opened the door to a different opportunity. As Elliott transitioned into the office, he quickly discovered a passion for project management and the client relationships that help bring projects to life.

Today, as an electrical project manager, Elliott oversees projects from start to finish — managing everything from estimating and preconstruction to execution and closeout. His ability to balance technical expertise, communication, and collaboration has made him a trusted leader for both clients and internal teams throughout every phase of a project.

Growing Alongside Preferred Electric

Since joining the company, Elliott has had a front-row seat to the company’s growth and transformation. What once operated with a small team of just two project managers has steadily evolved into a much larger and more dynamic operation over the years, especially following Horwitz’s acquisition of Preferred Electric. With that growth has come expanded capabilities, larger and more complex projects, and new opportunities for both employees and clients alike. “It’s been exciting to watch the opportunities expand alongside the team,” Elliott says. “There’s been a lot of momentum and growth over the years.”

For Elliott, one of the most rewarding parts of that growth has been the collaborative culture that continues to define the company. While project management requires coordination and planning in the office, he believes the true success of every project comes down to the people executing the work in the field. He has developed a deep appreciation for the experienced field leaders and skilled tradespeople who bring projects to life every day. “No matter how talented the office team is, the field leaders are the ones who make a concept real,” he says. “We’re fortunate to have incredibly talented people on our jobs who do amazing work and consistently deliver for our customers.”

That team-first mentality extends beyond internal collaboration and into the way Preferred Electric, a Horwitz Company approaches client relationships. According to Elliott, one of the Preferred’s defining qualities is its willingness to tackle challenges head-on and find solutions, even when projects become complicated. Rather than taking a rigid approach, the team prides itself on being flexible, responsive, and committed to helping customers succeed. “We’ll always try to find a solution for our customers, regardless of the challenge,” Elliott explains. “We’re willing to go out on a limb to make things happen.”

Embracing Change and Innovation

Throughout his career, Elliott has learned the importance of staying flexible in an ever-evolving industry. From advancements in automated takeoff tools to the growing use of artificial intelligence in design and project support, he recognizes that technology continues to reshape the electrical industry. “The industry is constantly changing,” he says. “You need to keep up with new technologies and be open to learning new ways of working.” That same perspective shapes the advice he gives to those entering the industry. “Show up,” he says simply. “You don’t need to be an expert right away, but there are so many opportunities available for people who are willing to learn and take advantage of the resources around them.”

Beyond the Office

Outside of work, Elliott enjoys spending time with his family and staying active outdoors. He and his wife have two sons, ages 11 and 13, who keep the family busy with activities and adventures. Before starting their family, Elliott and his wife spent time traveling around the world, an experience that reinforced their appreciation for Minnesota. “After traveling to so many incredible places, we still feel Minnesota is the perfect place to call home and raise our family,” he shares.

Looking Ahead

As Preferred Electric and Horwitz continue to grow, Elliott remains energized by the company’s momentum and collaborative culture. “The growth and energy within the company make it an exciting place to be,” he says. “We all put in a lot of effort, but it’s rewarding when you know you’re building something bigger together.”

With his industry knowledge, ‘Can-Do’ attitude, and commitment to delivering solutions for clients, Elliott continues to play an important role in driving success and client relationships for Preferred Electric.
