Creating a more efficient and maintainable cooling system at Friendship Village of Bloomington meant finding a solution that worked for both the facility and the people who call it home. Horwitz partnered with the 300,000-square-foot senior living community to convert its existing cooling system to a Samsung water-source heat-recovery VRF system connected to three Darcy geothermal well systems. These geothermal wells provide an efficient source of heat exchange, helping improve system performance while supporting reliable comfort throughout the community.

With residents remaining in their homes throughout construction, every aspect of the project was approached with their comfort and the facility’s daily operations in mind. From mechanical design and equipment selection to system layout, controls, installation, startup, and commissioning, Horwitz worked closely with the Friendship Village team to coordinate the work around existing infrastructure, resident access, and planned shutdowns.

The project included approximately 321 fan-coil units, 45 mode-control units, more than 35,000 feet of refrigerant piping, more than 3,500 feet of hydronic piping, and geothermal wells extending more than 400 feet deep. Horwitz carefully routed the piping around existing ceilings and utilities while meeting manufacturer requirements within the occupied facility. The completed system will provide Friendship Village with a more efficient, maintainable cooling solution designed to support the facility and its residents for years to come.
