Boston Scientific – Project Black Bear

Project Black Bear is a 400,000 SF research and development facility currently under construction for Boston Scientific. Designed with LEED Certification in mind, this cutting-edge facility integrates forward-thinking technologies to minimize its environmental impact and optimize energy efficiency.

Among its sustainable design features, the project utilizes a Darcy Geothermal System with four wells, paired with high-efficiency chillers, heat recovery chillers, electric boilers, and heat recovery units. These systems are designed to work harmoniously, reducing energy consumption and reinforcing the facility’s goal of setting a new benchmark in sustainable laboratory design.

From the outset, Horwitz partnered with the project team as a design-assist collaborator, working closely with the mechanical engineer and other stakeholders to align the project’s design with its budget. Our team’s proactive approach helped identify over 50 value management opportunities, enabling us to deliver an impressive $9 million in savings—all without compromising quality or functionality.

To ensure the project stays on schedule and within budget, our team has leveraged advanced prefabrication techniques, assembling multi-trade rack systems and pump skids off-site. This approach not only enhances quality control but also allows for immediate installation upon arriving onsite.
