True Friends

Horwitz partnered with True Friends and McGough Construction to deliver design-build mechanical, plumbing, and specialized water treatment systems for the renovation of a 26,000-square-foot recreation and wellness facility serving children and individuals with disabilities. Replacing an aging pool and gym building, the new facility offers modern, accessible spaces for recreation, therapy, and community programming that better support True Friends’ mission. 

The project included several specialized systems tailored to the facility’s unique needs. Because the building operates on a private well and septic system, Horwitz designed and installed an advanced water treatment system to address naturally high iron content. The natatorium required a dedicated HVAC system designed to maintain warm temperatures and controlled humidity year-round for swimmer comfort, along with water and drainage piping serving the pool systems. Early coordination with the precast contractor also allowed rooftop unit supply, return, and exhaust openings to be integrated into the precast wall panels during fabrication, creating a more efficient and seamless installation in the field. 

Throughout construction, the True Friends summer camp remained in operation, requiring additional safety planning and coordination to minimize disruptions while maintaining a safe environment for campers. Horwitz crews utilized Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), participated in weekly look-ahead meetings with the general contractor, and proactively planned work to maintain project efficiency while supporting ongoing site operations. 

The completed facility provides True Friends with a modern, highly accessible environment that will support recreation, therapy, and community engagement for years to come.
