Building a Career
Haley’s career path didn’t follow the route she originally expected. After earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Augsburg University, she found herself searching for a career that felt more hands-on and rewarding. She knew her future wasn’t behind a desk, but it wasn’t until her brother—a plumber—encouraged her to explore the trades that she discovered the opportunity she had been looking for.
Her introduction to the construction industry began in the metal trades, where she gained valuable experience and developed an appreciation for skilled craftsmanship. That early exposure laid the foundation for her transition into plumbing in 2021. Over the past 5 years, Haley has continued building her experience and passion for the trades as a plumbing apprentice, finding a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment in the work she does every day. She appreciates the opportunity to build something tangible and see the impact of her work firsthand. “I like that the work is tangible. At the end of the day, you can look back and see what you’ve built, and that’s really rewarding.” From supportive coworkers to opportunities for continued growth, Haley has found an environment where she can continue building both her confidence and skillset within the trades.
The Horwitz Fit
Haley has been working at Horwitz for a little over two and a half years, focusing much of her time on water piping and earning a 2G TIG welding certification, a specialized credential that demonstrates advanced welding skills and allows her to take on more complex piping projects. This certification opens the door to new challenges and opportunities for growth and allows her to strengthen her technical expertise while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field. When asked what she values most about Horwitz, she says the people she works alongside and the opportunities Horwitz provides to sharpen her skills, tackle new challenges, and expand her expertise. Whether she is working in the field or in the fabrication shop, Haley appreciates being surrounded by coworkers who are willing to teach and support her growth in the field. From dental offices to office buildings, each project provides Haley with opportunities to expand her knowledge, take on new challenges, and gain experience across a wide range of plumbing applications. Along the way, she has built the confidence and expertise that continue to shape her career in the trades.
Beyond learning the technical side of the trade, Haley has learned the importance of having confidence in herself and her abilities, something she considers one of the most important lessons she’s learned so far. “Breaking into a male-dominated field wasn’t always easy, but I’ve learned that confidence comes from focusing on your work—not other people’s opinions.” she describes. That same mindset has shaped how she approaches her career and personal growth. She encourages apprentices or anyone new to the trades to always be willing to learn and find importance in all the work the job provides. “You’re not above any job. Even the tedious work matters because there’s a purpose for it in the bigger picture,” she says.
In a short time, Haley has made a meaningful impact at Horwitz, earning a reputation as a dependable teammate who consistently shows up ready to learn, contribute, and support those around her. Her peers would describe Haley as a dedicated team member with a strong work ethic, a genuine eagerness to learn, and a coachable mindset—qualities that have helped her grow both personally and professionally. Her positive attitude and commitment to improving her skills have helped her build strong relationships with the teams she works alongside.
Beyond Her Role
In her free time, you’ll find Haley spending time with her daughter, tending to her prized home garden, sewing, crafting, and relaxing whenever she can fit it into her schedule. She especially enjoys spending time outdoors during the summer. While many of her hobbies allow her to slow down and recharge, there’s another side to Haley that reflects the determination and discipline she brings to her work. Something you may not know about her is that she previously competed in powerlifting and strongman competitions, a background that reflects the same strength and dedication she brings to the field.
Continuing to Grow
Looking ahead, Haley continues to refine her plumbing skillset, currently working towards obtaining her certification in med gases. As she continues her apprenticeship and beyond, she is eager to continue learning all that the industry and Horwitz have to offer, as every day provides something new to learn and refine. Whether it’s developing new technical skills or taking on different projects, Haley looks forward to the opportunities ahead and what’s possible for the next chapter in her career.
