Building a Career in the Trades
David’s exposure to the trades began long before he officially entered the industry. Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, he was heavily influenced by his grandfather, a carpenter who instilled in him a strong work ethic and appreciation for skilled craftsmanship. That early influence led David to construction at just 17 years old, when he began working summer help on the Mandalay Bay project. What began as a summer job quickly turned into a lifelong career path. Drawn to teamwork and satisfaction of the work, David stayed in the industry full time and eventually relocated to Minnesota in 2015, joining Local 455.
David’s career at Horwitz has been marked by continuous growth in both project scope and leadership responsibility. From his early days as a journeyman to becoming a field leader, he has helped guide major projects such as the expedited renovation for Project Phoenix completed in just nine months. During this project, he led major rack installation and mechanical room efforts, including the installation of sixteen multi-trade racks comprised of 2,512 feet of pipe in a single shift — an achievement he credits to the dedication and collaboration of his team. He also partnered closely with designer Mark Budge throughout the mechanical room design process, an experience that further shaped his leadership skills and professional development. David says opportunities like these, along with the support and mentorship of leaders such as Chris Cardenas, have played a major role in helping him grow into leadership positions throughout his career.
Leading by Example
On the job site, David has earned a reputation as someone people can rely on — a steady leader known for his work ethic and team-first mindset. Despite his large frame and tattoos, those who work alongside him quickly discover the calm and approachable leader behind the tough exterior. Whether he is helping crews navigate challenges in the field or mentoring younger tradespeople, David leads by example and creates an environment where people feel supported. One fellow tradesman described him as “someone who pulls as much as he pushes,” adding, “David leads by example, combining strong technical skills with a genuine commitment to mentoring and developing the people around him.”
One of the biggest lessons he has learned throughout his career is the importance of teamwork and mentorship. “No one succeeds in this trade on their own,” he says. “Construction is built on collaboration and learning from the experienced people around you.” He encourages younger workers to ask questions, lean on veteran tradespeople, and approach every opportunity with a willingness to learn.
Beyond the Jobsite
Outside of work, David enjoys spending time in the kitchen, especially experimenting with new chicken recipes and grilling — giving him a creative outlet outside of the trades. He also spends much of his free time with his puppy Bella, a black lab and Dalmatian mix, who keeps him busy with walks, training sessions, and plenty of energy at home. Outside the field, David values the slower pace and quality time that helps him recharge before stepping back onto the jobsite.

His commitment to accountability and teamwork reflects the values that drive Horwitz forward every day. Whether leading crews in the field, mentoring younger workers, or helping solve challenges on complex projects, David continues to make a lasting impact on both the people around him and the projects he helps bring to life.
